In the hearing session yesterday, claiming that people are being paid to riot, Republican State Senators in #Arizona voted to give police new powers to arrest anyone “who conspires to riot, even before anything actually happened.
SB1142 expands the state’s racketeering #laws, now aimed at organized crime, to also include rioting. And it redefines what constitutes rioting to include actions that result in damage to the property of others.
However, the law on the books in Arizona already legalize asset seizure for racketeering as evidenced by 13-14305. Under Arizona Law, if you are charged with racketeering, your property gets automatically seized pending an investigation. Therefore, if people are PLANNING TO #PROTEST, an Arizona police officer, may be within his rights to seize their property.
It passed yesterday, 17-13 in the Arizona State Senate. It hasn’t passed in the house yet.
